Prime Minister Gordon Brown has promised that this month’s Budget will include a raft of green measures.

Brown told the Independent newspaper that the Budget would kick start a “green recovery” in the UK’s economy.

Environmental transport measures are central to the green initiatives Brown revealed this week. Trials of electric cars, a roadside network of vehicle-charging points for electric cars and financial incentives for carmakers can be expected.

The PM also revealed that councils would also be invited to submit bids to become green cities.

The government is also poised to announce a relaxation of planning rules to encourage the building of more wind farms. The government also wishes to develop a clean coal industry by approving an experiment with carbon capture and storage.

The Prime Minister said that moving the UK to a low carbon economy could potentially create 400,000 jobs over the next eight years.
