Businesses could face fines of up to £5,000 from the Data Protection Commissioner if they don't tighten up their security measures when disposing of confidential papers, computer disks and other IT equipment.
That is the stark warning issued by the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) as SMT went to press.

Around 150,000 tonnes of waste is destroyed each year by so-called 'information destruction' firms but, according to the BSIA, this is only a small percentage of the overall amount of confidential waste generated by businesses in the UK. The remainder is sent to waste paper companies – who rarely have any form of security system in place – or is simply thrown into rubbish bins.

Security managers with responsibility for organising information destruction can obtain a handy fact sheet direct from the BSIA, which also details the relevant points set out in the Data Protection Act. Copies are available from the BSIA's Publications Department. Call 01905 21464 for further information.
