Here at BSj we could hardly criticise firms for not signing up to the 100 days of carbon campaign without doing our bit to cut carbon emissions. Dermot Hughes, account manager, ISS Coflex the firm responsible for facilities at Ludgate House where BSj is based, outlines what's been achieved.

With the 100 days up on CIBSE’s Carbon Clean Up campaign we can now report on the savings we have made here at Ludgate House, the home of BSJ.

Over the last three months through our assortment of initiatives we have made significant inroads. Our initiatives included encouraging occupants to switch off small power equipment like pc monitors and printers at night-time and on weekends, changing set points on the cooling plant as well as the introduction of theme days like ‘Walk down Wednesday’ where staff were asked to walk down the stairs rather than use the lifts.

Over the 100 days we have saved 231,340 kW of power which equates to a saving of 78 tonnes of carbon dioxide. This is equivalent to the volume of carbon dioxide that would fill eight floors of Ludgate House.

The figures just go to show what can be achieved with relatively small steps. But the 100 days campaign was just the beginning, by continuing the ‘Switching Off’ initiatives alone we could reduce the emission from Ludgate House by over 250 tonnes a year.
