The m&e industry has a set of KPIs to tie in with those for general construction.
The Building Services arm of the Construction Best Practice Programme, managed by the BSRIA, has launched a set of key performance indicators specifically for the m&e contracting sector.

The KPIs are designed to allow contractors and their clients to use benchmarking for selection and business improvement.

BSRIA has established benchmark performances for the following areas: client satisfaction with installation, design, service and o&m manual, defects, predictability of cost and time, profitability, productivity and safety.

The launch of the KPIs is accompanied by a handbook, a series of workshops, and the formation of a benchmarking club to allow detailed interrogation of findings.

The survey has thrown up some interesting findings about the industry. "In 31% of projects, clients selected m&e contractors on a price only basis," says BSRIA's Gerry Samuelsson-Brown. "These projects showed the lowest satisfaction scores with service," he states.

Only 14% of projects were partnering agreements, but in only half of these was the m&e contractor included. "The 8% of projects where m&e contractors were included in partnerships gave the best service scores," says Samuelsson-Brown.

Clients scored m&e contractors more highly than consultants when it came to design, finding them more innovative.

And clients take note: variations to contract will mean low cost and time predictability.
