Ian Eggers, Mace
£28m apartment building in Westminster, London Ian Eggers was “head and shoulders” above the other 80 or so entrants for this year’s awards and so won his category – projects over £17m – comfortably, despite tough competition from Wall and Small.
Tony Wall ACIOB, Mace
£54m refurbish-ment and new-build offices for Boots the Chemist, Nottingham Mace project manager Tony Wall came second in this category. Wall impressed the judges with his mastery of project management and a zealous approach to health and safety.
The Boots project was a complicated mix comprising the refurbishment of a grade II* listed, SOM-designed office built in the 1960s and a new open-plan office and link building. The client set two key dates: December 1998 for occupation of the new office; and March 2000 for the refurbished office. Wall was able to offer the client an option to occupy the refurbished office six months early.
As part of a safety drive, Wall banished scaffolding from the site. Trade contractors mainly used mobile towers instead. Wall also introduced a safety league for trade contractors with a monthly prize for the best performer. The client recalled: “Wall ensured the site was kept clean at all times; scaffolding towers, ladders, power tools and workwear were checked relentlessly and he removed from site any operatives found working recklessly.”
Colin Small MCIOB, Bovis Lend Lease
£92m new-build Marks & Spencer store, Manchester Colin Small bet a case of champagne with the project QS that he would finish the £92m Marks & Spencer store in Manchester in time for the Christmas 1999 rush. Francis Ives, head of the QS Cyril Sweett, rued the bet when in November he had to stump up the bubbly.
The client recalled: “Throughout this period of continuous pressure, he showed a steady and unwavering determination to deliver the project safely, on time and to the highest quality, yet balancing the interests of all parties. It is hard to imagine how it could have been achieved to the same programme and quality without Colin’s enormous presence, professionalism and experience.”
