Davis Langdon & Everest (who produces BSJ's 'Cost Model' features) has published Buildings that work for your business for the Institute of Directors.

The guide is intended as a reference for those contemplating a building for business purposes. It addresses the problem that many business decision makers, for example finance directors, may not be fully conversant with – the processes and procedures involved in procuring a building.

It also aims to provide pointers for making what can be a difficult experience run more smoothly, with advice on how to plan for, and have, a building which is good for business.

This short book (just over 80 pages) covers the building procurement process from deciding to build, to avoiding contractors' claims.

Chapters include advice on establishing the business case, assembling the team, preparing the brief and signing off the project.

There is detailed advice for clients on developing requirements, relating to the client and design team balancing the conflicting priorities of different user groups and stakeholders; ensuring clear performance requirements; specifying functionality as well as feature; and an effective brief to make sure the differences between qualitative needs and quantitive requirements are understood.

Authors of the chapters include Simon Rawlinson and Rob Smith of Davis Langdon & Everest, as well as Adrian Leaman, director of Building Use Studies, and Alan Crane, chairman of the Movement for Innovation.
