Buro Happold is providing services and structural design for the Turin Olympic speed skating rink, construction of which has just started in readiness for the Winter Olympic Games in 2006. Without the advantage of altitude encountered at previous venues such as Salt Lake City and Calgary, the focus of the design has been on achieving and controlling both the quality and the uniformity of the ice on the 400 m oval track under variable lighting and spectator loads. Architects for the scheme are HOK SVE and Studio Zoppini Associati.
