The government’s architecture watchdog has appointed a new chief executive and published a strategy focused on housing growth areas and market renewal.
Richard Simmons, director of environment at Medway council, will replace Jon Rouse as chief executive at the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment. He will take up his post in September.

Rouse became chief executive of the Housing Corporation on 3 June.

Simmons has 25 years of regeneration experience, including time in the late 1980s with the controversial London Docklands Development Corporation.

At Medway, he managed the 7000-home regeneration of the Medway waterfront.

CABE’s new strategy aims to tighten its burgeoning remit. It plans to concentrate on consultancy work and its lobbying activities but will expand its focus into the market renewal regions and the government’s housing growth areas.
