The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) has responded to the Government's calls for a strategy for the reduction of carbon emissions from the built environment.
The Institution has undertaken to review its Professional Code of Conduct to encourage its members to actively champion sustainability and lower carbon emissions.

CIBSE believes that the technology exists to reduce emissions by 60% by 2050, but the Government needs to create the right regulatory framework.

CIBSE sees a close link between sustainability and the findings of the Rethinking construction report. "Lowest cost adversarial contracts don't encourage the inclusion of energy efficient design as a natural part of meeting client needs," says CIBSE.

Better training, particularly at craft level, guidance and best practice should be applied, says the Institution. CIBSE's plan concentrates on what its members can do now to reduce such emissions, and how the Institution can help them to meet long-term targets.
