Women at an all-female building college that was going bust had their courses saved by a merger with the College of North West London in Brent.
The college’s Head of Faculty Frank Horan is a popular man. He received a standing ovation at the start of this year from relieved Women’s Education in Building staff and students after he offered them a rescue package within days of first hearing news of the bankruptcy.
Out of 120 students on WEB’s books, 84 enrolled to finish their qualifications with CNWL, supported by at least seven of their ten former tutors, who were taken into the College’s employment.
WEB was set up as a charitable body more than 20 years ago. Until recently it was turning out 400 graduates a year in carpentry, joinery, bricklaying, painting and plumbing, up to NVQ Level 2.
The new intake restarted their programmes at the College’s Willesden site in May. They lost about six weeks of tuition, so CNWL extended the term into the summer and put on Saturday morning classes to help them prepare for exams.
