What’s the most exciting aspect of your new job?
“I could say saving the planet, but that would obviously be untrue. It’s actually seeing how sustainable development has taken off over the last few years.”
Who would you most like to interview and what would you ask them?
“Fidel Castro – What happens next? Oh, and who is your tailor?”
What kind of house do you live in?
“Mid-terrace Victorian two-up, two-down in the most imaginatively named part of Nottingham: Sherwood.”
If you were minister for the environment, what policies would you introduce?
“I’d rather be secretary of state for trade and industry – I could then get energy prices back to a realistic level and give tax breaks for renewable energy technology. And, over coffee after cabinet meetings, I could whisper in Gordon Brown’s ear about changing winter fuel payments from a revenue subsidy to capital investment, reducing VAT on energy efficiency products and doing something meaningful with the climate change levy.”
Favourite book
“The Child in Time by Ian McEwan.”
Favourite film
“Too many to list, but any Mike Leigh film usually hits the spot.”
Hobbies
“Now that I have a rented garage, I intend to allow nostalgia to overcome fear and get a motorbike again. Oh, and I have a thing about art and architecture.”
