Profile

Name Andrew Cutts

New job Geographical information systems officer, South Staffordshire Housing Association

Job description “I will integrate all the association’s information databases and turn them into easy-to-use, visual formats such as maps.”

How did you get there? “This is my first job since graduating; I did a BSc in Geography at Aberystwyth and then an MSc in GIS at Leicester. If ever there was a post created for me, this was it, because my thesis was on geographical information systems in housing associations – South Staffordshire Housing Association is one of the leading innovators in the GIS field.”

What advice would you give someone hoping to follow in your footsteps? “There is no recognised body for this job, although it has been around for 20 years. The best way into it is to get a good background in IT then to do an MSc; there are no degree courses available.”

Favourite book “Fever Pitch by Nick Hornby.”

Favourite TV programme “The Premiership.”

Favourite film “Fight Club.”

Housing situation “Tenant.”

Hobbies “Football, cricket, golf – watching and playing them.”

Dream job “A professional footballer – or failing that, developing GIS software.”
