Michelle McDowell wins the Veuve Clicquot Award, recognising the achievements of women in industry

Michelle McDowell has been named as the 2011 Veuve Clicquot Business Woman of the Year. The chair of civil and structural engineering at BDP was chosen for her success in what is typically regarded as an industry governed by men.

The judges emphasised her contribution to the firm’s strong financial results, while maintaining socially and environmentally ethical business practises.

Ms Mcdowell, an advocate of low-carbon construction, has headed BDP’s engineering team on high profile projects such as the redevelopment of the Royal Albert Hall, the BBC headquarters in Birmingham, and the sliding roof at Wimbledon.

Judges said her achievements were more notable because engineering was traditionally male dominated. Ms McDowell said she wanted to inspire women in the business world. She has created a bursary scheme for female engineering students at New Hall, Cambridge.

The judges added that MBE McDowell “embraces the nature of the awards and it is wonderful to see a stand out businesswoman actively championing the next generation of female entrepreneurs”.
