Electronic tagging to improve building maintenance and using the earth to heat and store water top a list of research projects announced by construction minister Brian Wilson.
The BRE-led proposal to replace paper records with electronic tagging and wireless technology in the maintenance of boilers, fire doors and escalators has been granted £180 000 of funding.
Arup's initiative to increase the number and use of ground storage systems that utilise cylinders buried under buildings to store and heat water has been held up as an example of sustainable technology. The system, which uses one-third of the energy consumed by comparable conventional water tanks, has received £180 000 in funding for further development.
Over 80 projects will share £5.25 million in the programme.
