CASH REGISTER: Homes and a register office similar to those in this design by architect Smith Smalley could be built on land owned by South Tyneside council. The local authority plans to form a joint venture with a developer to develop the South Shields site.

Money raised from private housing will fund the register office.

The development should be completed by mid-2006.
