CCTV installer, Quadrant, used Pentax lenses utilising the zooms in the main system to cover car parks, underpasses, shopping centres and residential streets linked to an alarm system covering every major school in the area. In the latest phase of the operation in Castleford, TIS Mansfield have installed a further 17 Pentax 8-120mm lenses, and Pontefract is also set to be linked to the CCTV system next year.
Wakefield’s CCTV supervisor, Darren Pollington, says the cameras have had a remarkable effect, and there is now “not a single empty unit in the village, and business is thriving again”. Images are collected locally from the cameras and fed via fibre optics to the Wakefield central control room, which has doubled in size since it first came on line. Among the biggest successes is the reduction of car crime at Castleford, which is claimed to have been cut by 50% in just six months. “Car parks were simply not safe and were always being targeted by thieves. We believe CCTV is stamping it out,” said Mr Pollington.
