The chancellor said it was a “call to action and a challenge to government”.
Speaking at the event at Portcullis House in Westminster, Centrepoint chief executive Anthony Lawton highlighted how an allowance would give financial assistance to young people who are on a course of education, training or for those starting work.
A recent survey of 500 members of the public, carried out for Centrepoint by social research company Vision 21, found that nine out of 10 of those questioned backed the idea of such an allowance.
