Up to Half a million families will need re-housing if a new bill on overcrowding is approved.
Labour MP Andy Love has proposed changes to the law on how many people can share a bedroom. His plan would also mean kitchens and living rooms could no longer be counted as sleeping areas.

The bill is unlikely to become law in its own right, but Love will pressure ministers to incorporate it into the upcoming Housing Bill.

People in overcrowded accommodation would not be able to take their housing provider to court under the proposed law, but councils would be obliged to report levels of overcrowding to the ODPM.

The bill would modernise the overcrowding standards set down in the 1935 Housing Act. In that law, children under 10 were not counted when assessing overcrowding.
