The membership and registration briefing sessions were first introduced in the UK and Republic of Ireland in 2004, and brought about an increase in application numbers as a direct result.

These briefings provide useful information to prospective applicants for both CIBSE membership and professional registration with the Engineering Council (UK) and aim to ‘demystify' the application and interview process. In March 2006, sessions were held in Dubai and Hong Kong.

The briefing in Dubai was in many ways a pilot exercise, as this was the first time a CIBSE event has taken place in the area. The Institution is committed to supporting and expanding the membership base there. There are currently some 180 members in the area; 45 of them, along with a number of people interested in joining the Institution attended the briefing. Understanding the need to facilitate the application process locally, in particular with reference to the professional review interviews, CIBSE had also scheduled an interviewer training session during the visit. The meeting was attended by a number of Members and Fellows of CIBSE who have now joined our international interviewer register, making the need for candidates to travel to the UK or Hong Kong for their interview a thing of the past. In addition to the interview training, the meeting generated an interesting discussion on future CIBSE activities in the region.

In contrast, the CIBSE Hong Kong region is already well established with some 2,500 members. The Institution had the pleasure to meet several key members of the region and to hold a series of events, including a membership and registration briefing session which was attended by 50 people. The briefing was held at the City University of Hong Kong and was hosted by the CIBSE Hong Kong Young Members' Group.

Training of new and existing professional review interviewers and accreditation of qualifications at Hong Kong Polytechnic University also took place. The week concluded with the launch of CIBSE Guide A.
