Graham Watts, chief executive of the Construction Industry Council (CIC) and an honorary fellow of CIBSE, received an OBE in the New Year’s Honours list for his services to construction.

Watts said he was “surprised and delighted” at the news and hoped that it is seen as a tribute to the multidisciplinary work of the council as a whole.

Watts has been chief executive of CIC since 1991 and is secretary of the Strategic Forum for Construction's Olympic and Integration Task Forces, both of which are hosted by CIC.

He is also a board member of ConstructionSkills and council member of Constructing Excellence. Additionally, he is a visiting professor at the University of Northumbria, an honorary fellow of the RIBA and the ABE and the Faculty of Building, and an honorary member of the RICS and CIAT.

He was awarded the President’s Medal of the CIOB in 2000 and the Peter Stone Award in 1996.

Outside his professional duties, Watts is performance director for the British Fencing Team and the team’s manager for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing this August.

In his spare time he enjoys writing about dance.

It was the first Honours List recommended by Prime Minister Gordon Brown and 972 people were recommended for an award. Just over 830 candidates were selected at MBE and OBE level.
