circle 33 housing association is believed to be considering hiring security for a scheme designed to cater for elderly Muslim tenants.
The London-based group’s move follows a call in the Daily Star for the development to be “knocked down” because it might lead to segregation.

The Sonali Gardens scheme in east London is being built to provide extra-care facilities commissioned by Tower Hamlets council. It is no different from many other such schemes run by other associations, usually black and minority ethnic specialists.

A statement from Circle 33 denied that the scheme was for Asians only but did not comment on any security threat.

It added that each applicant’s needs would be assessed individually and the “most appropriate place found”, although it said the scheme was expected to “respond to the needs of Asian elders and is likely to be a popular choice among applicants from this group”.
