I read the 'death of a degree' article in the current CM with almost disbelief. The majority of the report is tendentious, contradictory and sensationalized, more befitting of tabloid newspapers. The distinct negative 'spin' in this report abrogates any attempt to accept this as an outcome of any robust research. I suggest that you reserve a significant amount of space in the next CM for reader's responses. I intend to discuss your article with colleagues at the University of Glamorgan and also at our forthcoming Strategic Forum; (a collaborative partnership we have with employers and CITB) on 18 March before making a formal response. I also expect that this article will be hotly debated at the BEAR conference in Salford in April. The essence of the article appears to bemoan the poor qualities and capabilities of new, young graduates and to pit their failings against mature (trades background, experienced) Site Managers. This is not only a puerile exercise but your 'findings' from industry are at best suspicious and certainly do not concur with our experience of employer feedback of our graduates. Indeed, some of the same people you quoted have said the exact opposite to us! If the intention of this article is to incite debate you have certainly succeeded. I only hope that you give a fair hearing to the respondents in the next issue.
