Recently, some of you may have completed a CIOB online questionnaire, which sought to build a profile of the magazine’s readership

We wanted to know what you do, the type of the projects you work on, whether you work mainly on site or in head office. It wasn’t idle curiosity, but market research aimed at linking our editorial coverage to readers’ interests and working lives.

Because, from next month, you’ll see some changes in Construction Manager. For the past ten years, the magazine has been published on behalf of the CIOB by the Builder Group, which has latterly been owned by UBM. That publishing contract was amicably dissolved earlier this year, and the CIOB then selected a smaller but growing company – Atom Publishing of Clerkenwell – to publish the magazine and website.

There will be plenty of continuity after the move – the current editorial team will transfer to Atom, and you’ll recognise many of your favourite regular features. As has been the case at UBM, the magazine will not simply be a channel for broadcasting CIOB-sourced information, but a vibrant independent publication with its own character and voice.

But there will also be a new design, and some changes of emphasis drawing on the results of the online survey. These confirmed much that we already knew, but also contained a few surprises. Which just goes to show that in journalism, as well as in construction, there’s always something new to learn.

And we’d like to learn more about what you want from your magazine. From 1 October, please contact me using the following new details elaine@atompublishing.co.uk or 020 7490 5636.
