As many of our readers will already be aware, this is the final issue of Building Services Journal. The magazine has been produced by Building Services Publications since 1978, so naturally there is some sadness that it has reached the end of the road.

Over the decades the Journal has witnessed enormous changes in the building services profession. When it first rolled off the presses, the sector was all about the provision of engineering systems to heat or cool a scheme, the design of which would already have been well advanced by the architect.

Now, with the increasing emphasis on energy efficiency and sustainable construction, the building services engineer’s remit is evolving and expanding dramatically. Today’s engineers have a fundamental role to play in any project, working with the client and architect from the outset.

As the profession has evolved, so too has magazine publishing. Building Services Publications, BSj’s publisher, is a joint venture between UBM Built Environment and CIBSE. However, in a rapidly changing media environment, the two organisations have found that they now have divergent objectives and so the parties have agreed to bring this arrangement to an end.

But it’s not all sad news. I’m delighted to announce that from February, both CIBSE and UBM will be launching new titles for building services engineers. CIBSE’s publication will be called the CIBSE Journal; UBM’s magazine will go under the title Building Sustainable Design.

All CIBSE members should receive the CIBSE Journal automatically. To ensure you also get your copy of BSD, please contact me at UBM via jlevett@cmpi.biz.

And finally… best wishes for the new year to all our readers.
