Following publication of the current edition of Part L of the Building Regulations, CIBSE was asked by the ODPM to publish guidance on commissioning of lighting schemes.

This appeared in 2003 as CIBSE Commissioning Code L: Lighting.

The current draft revisions to Part L lay greater stress on commissioning than previous editions and include a suggestion as how to judge whether someone is competent to commission (though it had previously proved difficult to find a suitable wording for commissioning of lighting schemes).

The Society of Light and Lighting is working with the Electrical Contractors’ Association and the National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting to develop a short course leading to a certificate indicating competence to commission.

In due time the courses will be run at a number of venues around the country.
