The Labour Force Survey for December 2003 found 80 000 became self-employed during the three months to October and a 41% rise in those entering construction. The numbers in full-time employment fell by 92 000 over the same period.
The ECA has warned that it is essential that all new industry entrants have the relevant skills and technical competence to ensure health and safety.
