Scottish electrical contractors are being misled by inaccurate reporting that Part P of the Building Regulations will change requirements for electrical installations in Scotland, according to the Scottish Building Standards Agency.

This is not true and contractors from north of the border will not have to sign up to any competent persons schemes for self-certification unless they carry out work in England and Wales.

In Scotland, electrical installations have been subject to the regulations since 1964. However, the Scottish system will change in May 2005, with the introduction of the Building (Scotland) Regulations 2004. Part N will then become standard 4.5. The technical requirements will basically be unchanged but some installations in houses will no longer require a warrant. Work in flats will continue to require a warrant. Scottish ministers have approved a scheme for Approved Certifiers of Construction to certify that installations meet the regulations. SELECT has been appointed to run that scheme.
