The findings of the Construction Products Association's second annual e-commerce survey reveal an industry stepping back from the dotcom fever of 12 months ago.
Jean Emblin, external affairs director, commented: "This second survey identifies a very different view from last year's. The industry remains as committed as ever to embracing the benefits of e-commerce, it is the expected pace at which it will develop that has changed significantly.
"Last year, the industry believed that e-commerce would account for 50% of all transactions by 2005. These results are far more cautious at 22% of all transactions."
Faster transaction times, reduced costs and less paperwork are still seen as the main benefits. The construction culture remains the biggest constraint to future development.
