We should be building houses like this in the UK if we want to cope with global warming, according to DTI-funded research project led by Arup. High-mass walls, small windows and shutters are all ways of keeping cool in Mediterranean countries, and should be adopted here if temperatures keep rising as they have been. The study suggests that modern, lightweight homes will suffer overheating problems from 2020 onwards, but that houses like the one pictured here will perform well without air conditioning until the 2050s.
