Basingstoke & Dean council chief executive Katrine Sporle has been appointed chief planning inspector at the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.
Sporle will advise the government on its reform of the planning system, including its pledge to make planning gain more accountable. She will replace outgoing inspector Chris Shepley in January 2003.
Sporle said: "Having led a local authority, I know how much influence the planning system can have on the local community."
Before taking the helm at Basingstoke & Dean Sporle spent four years working at consultants PriceWaterhouse Coopers, and worked for the planning departments of Salisbury and Westminster councils.
I want to work with the government to make the planning system more responsive to the needs of the community."
