Davis Langdon’s US arm has scooped the role of cost consultant on the team designing the Cultural Centre in New York’s World Trade Centre. It is putting its San Francisco and New York offices on the job, which is due to start on 6 June.
The Snøhetta Design Team is also using the firm’s design management arm, Davis Langdon Schumann Smith. Design development is to be completed by year-end and construction, along with the rest of the World Trade Centre, by 2009. Groundbreaking for the Cultural Centre will begin in 2007.
Davis Langdon is sending Martin Gordon from its San Francisco office and Ethan Burrows from New York. They will handle budgeting and detailed cost-planning.
The current design features a horizontal building of up to 250,000 ft2, which will boast five double-height floors and a landscaped rooftop garden offering a unique view of Memorial Plaza.
The building will house the International Freedom Centre, The Drawing Centre and the Visitor Centre.
The Drawing Centre will occupy the lower floors of the building’s northern end and the International Freedom Centre will occupy the southern end. The upper floors will house shared event and educational spaces, in which the cultural organisations will present their own programming as well as hosting other events and festivals, such as the Tribeca Film Festival and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.
The Snøhetta team was appointed by the overall client, Lower Manhattan Development Corporation.
