The book has a deliberate absence of what it describes as typical construction details. It aims to bring together philosophical, technical, legal, and social issues to provide a link between manufacturer, designer, and builder.
An attempt has been made to integrate and encourage environmentally-responsible approaches to design, construction, use and re-use throughout the text. For example, it gives a holistic approach to the issues faced by designers in their everyday work. A number of case studies are used to illustrate these issues.
The book is arranged in three sections. Part one deals with the background issues that colour the manner in which building takes place. Part two traces the life of a typical building project, from briefing and assembly, to building use, and eventual disassembly. Part three tackles underlying issues, concluding with a theory of good practice.
