Check the mirror
The IR120 from Alarmcom is said to provide a high level of protection, as well as immunity for animals weighing up to 40 kg. This PIR uses Alarmcom's black triplex mirror technology which increases sensitivity by creating three times as many detection zones as standard devices.

This patented technology provides a high level of immunity to interference from white light, making it easier to position the detector in any environment, regardless of ambient light. This compact PIR is suitable for rooms of up to 10m by 10m and its snap-in design and automatic self-test also make installation easy.

"Installation is made easy, with all the active components sited in the removable outer cover," reported our Bench Testers in last October's issue. "The IR120 performed very well during stability testing. The standard of design and manufacture is very good, and it represents very good value for money."

No dead spots
Visonic's new generation of NEXT detectors uses digital technology to offer greater reliability and reduce the number of false alarms without compromising detection capabilities. Due to the "unique" optical system, Visonic says NEXT products give comprehensive all-round coverage, with faster detection and no dead spots.

Visonic's new 3D lenses also need less adjustment than conventional lenses, so installation time is kept to a minimum. The Next detectors are all in the same compact and stylish housing, which means that they can easily be interchanged: K9-85 – the only pet tolerant detector allowing free movement for animals up to 85lbs Advanced PIR – provides superior detection coverage and singular false alarm immunity QES – Quad Element Sensor provides comprehensive protection and reliability for commercial applications.

"If you are looking for a powerful and reliable detector that is quick and easy to install, try the NEXT range. Your customers will love their smart looks," said Visonic's Nicky Birkin.

Vertical Beam Shaping
DSC uses Vertical Beam Shaping in its Digital Bravo 3P. This is an innovative lens design, developed to provide effective pet immunity while still offering good catch performance, especially in the area close to the PIR.

Coupled with DSC's pet recognition software, developed specifically for this detector, it ensures more complete and uniform detection throughout the detection range.

The Digital Bravo 3P can be set to a variety of environmental conditions. When configured to provide high catch performance, the detector will ignore a single pet weighing up to 13.6kg.

Where multiple pets are involved, or a higher level of pet immunity is required, it can be set to ignore single or multiple pets with a combined weight of up to 27.3kg.

Other features include high temperature stability and protection against all false alarm sources – lightning, power surges, radio interference, car headlights, fluorescent lights, insects and dust.

Pet-smart microprocessor
NAPCO's IQ Profiler is a pet-smart PIR that profiles false alarm sources and installs in under a minute. Inside is advanced microprocessor-based circuitry with built-in profiles of common false and real alarm sources, rejecting profiles of dogs, cats, birds, heaters and blinds.

With 50lbs pet immunity, "superior" false alarm rejection and dual focus lenses in a bi-optic case for exceptional distance profiling, the IQ Profiler is suitable for either residential or commercial security.

A quarter turn of a screwdriver in the back housing's mounting disk, and the unit embeds itself in any corner with self-projecting, fast-anchoring wall pins.

Wiring is also easy, with snap-down terminal strips. Just insert stripped wires in each one, and snap down.

Other features include look down/creep zones, a sensor chamber that prevents insect, draft and dust interference and vertical aiming capabilities.

PIR combination
Combining PIR technology with pressure wave detection was the idea which won Pyronix an award at the security industry dinner during the recent IFSEC.

The Veritec P2 was judged to be innovative by using the two technologies – with two separate outputs – in the one housing.

The detector can be wired with one standard alarm cable and therefore provides a cost-effective solution to confirmed detection, suitable for use on new or existing systems. Pyronix says the P2 enables the professional installer to comply effortlessly with ACPO requirements without compromising security or incurring higher costs.

Our Bench Testers explained in the April issue of Security Installer: "This is a sequential confirmation detector which uses pressure sensing technology to generate first alarm when a false entry occurs, followed by PIR technology to generate a confirmation signal when movement is detected within the covered zone – all in an attractively-styled, very neat enclosure.

"The PIR performed very well during stability testing."

Man or beast?
Cooper Security believes its Scantronic 420 PIR is one of the most intelligent pet tolerant detectors on the market.

By using Target Specific Imaging, the 430 can differentiate between humans and animals up to 38kg. This helps to avoid pet-generated false alarms without compromising security.

The 430 covers 12m, using cylindrical lens technology. The detector can also distinguish between electrical spikes and genuine obstructions, helping to prevent false alarms.

This model shares the same housing as the Scantronic 420 Digital PIR and 460 Domestic Twintec, and has been designed to fit with any décor.

Compares with duals
Why fit a poor quality dual technology detector when you can fit a better performing, high quality PIR that will save money as well? The question comes from Optex Europe, who claim there are often circumstances where using microwave technology is the wrong thing to do.

So the company, which has produced a number of professional PIRs over the years, came out with the FX-50 range. Our Bench Testers looked at the FX-50SQ and said it would be specified where environmental problems were anticipated.

In great shape

The Scantronic 420 from Cooper Security is suitable for the home, office or light commercial buildings. Designed to fit perfectly with any décor, the 420 is described as stylish, extremely robust and very compact. It uses 3D cylindrical lens technology that extends 12m 90 degree multiple solid vertical curtain coverage with uniform sensitivity detection. This provides wall creep zone coverage and eliminates any dead spots. Fully sealed optics provide full protection against draught, dust and insect ingress, offering a high level of environmental immunity and reducing the burden from repeated false alarms. Bench Tested in the March edition of Security Installer, our testers concluded: “This is a fine detector with decent performance and a stylish new shape at a very keen price. In fact, with a trade price of around £9, it is difficult to imagine how much lower the cost of a reliable professional PIR can go.”

Ten-year guarantee

Electronics Line developed the Mercury range of PIRs to enable installers to choose the correct detector for every situation – without forgoing aesthetics. The range, all in identical casings, includes standard, quad, adaptive temperature compensated, microprocessor-based and animal immune models. All the PCBs are compatible with all casings and are easily removed by a quick release device, making for simple detector requirement changes. The standard model is the EL-100 which – like all Mercury detectors – boasts a look-down zone, a 1200 white lux filter, 40v/m to 1GHz radio frequency interference protection, sealed optics, end-of-line resistor compatibility and remote LED disable connections. The conclusion of our Bench Testers was: “The range performed well during stability testing. The standard of design and manufacture is very good and they represent good value for money – ten year guarantee included.”
