Fletcher was told in April that she was not eligible to stand for the board of Oldham's ALMO because she did not represent a tenants' association. She has been a leading light in the Higginshaw Village residents' association for a decade, but presently holds no office.
Fletcher is one of 12 tenants selected from more than 100 applicants for sounding board places. They underwent a rigorous selection process that judged their debating skills as well as their ability to process information and work in a team.
The board, which was set up in May, tackled rent restructuring at its first meeting last week. Housing minister Lord Rooker put in a "brief appearance", the group said, but will attend future meetings. A full report of the meeting will be published next month.
The board members are: Dilys Fletcher, Oldham; Paul Leader, King's Lynn; George Loczy, Dunstable; Susan O'Shea, Honiton, Devon; James Martin, Middlesbrough; Anne Whitely, Wakefield; Philip Blott, London; Paula Walker, Portsmouth; Nick Dakin, Leicester; Norman Graves, Warrington; Carron Scott, Taunton; and Viveen Scott, London.
Fletcher said: "I want to do the best for ALMO tenants and think I have the knowledge. The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister values me enough to select me to sit on this board but Oldham apparently does not."
