The average time in the job is six years although 27 per cent have been in the job for more than ten years.
The study, by Plimsoll Publishing, says 19 per cent are more than 60 and over the next three to five years "as these bastions of the industry reach retirement age, there could be a profound effect on the companies they formerly controlled."
Of the 323 companies run by the over-60s, almost 43 per cent are classed as "successful" … the same figure as for the industry average.
Plimsoll says predators are looking for companies where the directors are older. Named in the study are 91 companies where every board member is over 55.
A total of 25 per cent of companies in the industry have appointed directors within the last two years … for 30 companies it represents a whole new board.
"These companies should be regarded as a new competitor," says Plimsoll.
