The Disability Discrimination Bill announced in the Queen’s Speech fails to address the housing needs of disabled people at the most basic level.
By ignoring disability housing registers and failing to set a target for building new accessible houses, the bill offers nothing to the thousands of disabled people living in inappropriate housing.
Research by John Grooms reveals that disabled people wait a disproportionately long time for suitable housing because there is insufficient commitment to their needs, resulting in a shortfall of more than 300,000 wheelchair-standard homes in the UK.
For too long the housing needs of disabled people have been low on the political agenda and, as a result, we have a housing crisis. The time has come for those in authority to address the housing needs of disabled people. We will continue to call for registers to be implemented and 10% of all new social houses to be built to wheelchair standard.
