Regarding David Strong’s letter about CIBSE’s name (BSj 07/06), I agree it should be more focused – but even I (as a fellow champion of energy issues) would argue that CIBSE is not just about sustainability. Comfort, good services, well designed and operated buildings, health and safety all have equal or greater priority.
Rather than cutting the name down, lets try building it up using the words we actually need. Institution, building and engineers all seem fairly fundamental to who we are. I think chartered is redundant - none of the other institutions seem to need it. So one might propose IBE – the Institution of Building Engineers. Some might argue this gives a slight impression of being structural engineers rather than environmental services. However, if you Google ‘building engineers UK’ you get CIBSE – is the internet telling us something? I think IBE provides a title on the tin that says what we do!
