The Climate Change Levy comes into effect on 1 April 2001.
It will typically add 10-20% to the price of energy to encourage efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.
Revenues will be recycled back to business through a 0·3% cut in NI contributions and support for energy saving technologies.
Discounts for energy intensive industries have been negotiated so as not to harm international competitiveness. The government is also providing first year capital allowances for investments in energy-saving technologies. A list of products which qualify will be published by 1 April 2001 (www.eca.gov.uk) and will be regularly reviewed.
