Bell ID – the smart card subsidiary of access control specialist the Bell Group – has recently completed two security projects at Holland's celebrated Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam.
The new border passage system was opened just prior to Christmas as part of the Schiphol Group's Privum service programme. Automatic passage is allowed after comparison between a passenger's iris scan and the iris data held on the chip of his/her own smart card.
This scheme – the first large-scale application of biometrics anywhere in the Netherlands – uses Bell ID's ANDiS card and application management tools.
In the second smart card initiative, 80,000 airport workers will receive a multi-application smart card (with iris recognition for those deployed to work in secure areas) allowing physical access to buildings and car parks.
Also managed by ANDiS card, the scheme includes post-issuance personalisation – allowing the information on any given card to be updated without the need for centralised recall.
