The vast majority of the construction industry still has not got to grips with web-based technology and e-commerce, according to a survey commissioned by the Construction Products Association (CPA).

A massive 83% of respondents cited the ‘culture of the industry’ as a major constraint on the development of e-commerce within the construction sector. Respondents showed an understanding of the benefits that e-commerce can bring – posting reduced costs as a main advantage, followed by faster transactions, fewer errors and less paperwork. However, they cited set up costs, loss of personal contact and retraining were off-putting.

Commenting on the results, Jean Emblin, external affairs director at the CPA, said: “At first glance it might seem that little has changed since 2000, when 86% of companies highlighted the culture of the industry as a major constraint. However, five years on, the construction industry is still committed to embracing e-commerce, with 80% believing that it is important in developing their business activity.

Growth in the use of e-commerce, at 26%, has been slower than predicted in 2000, but it is close to the 22% predicted in 2001.”
