London Mayor Ken Livingstone has given his approval for the £4 billion Stratford city development in East London. The scheme will create 4500 homes and 34000 jobs as well as setting high standards for sustainable development.

Arup Associates were part of the masterplanning team for the project. Practice principal Mike Beaven said: “We wrote the environmental sustainability framework for the project which included addressing the Mayor’s energy strategy. This is the first big project that has had to address that.”

The scheme aims to deliver 25% carbon savings against current good practice from day one, with a commitment from the developers to allow it to increase these savings to 80% by 2050. As an exemplar for the Mayor’s Energy Strategy, a 20Mwe combined cooling, heating and power system providing electricity, district heating and cooling will be installed on the project.

All buildings have also been designed to achieve a minimum 10% reduction in carbon emissions below Building Regulations. The three other masterplanning consultants were Fletcher Priest, West 8 and ARUP.
