Forest Homes has published a £34m masterplan for the redevelopment of 900 east London homes that aims to improve links between the estate and its surrounding community.
Andy von Bradsky, a director at architect PRP, said: "The current design of the estate alienates the residents from their neighbours in Leyton.

"Our plans tie it in with the surrounding area, increase accessibility and integrate it with the rest of the community."

The plan has just been given the go-ahead from the Greater London Authority after being approved by Waltham Forest's planning committee and referred to London mayor Ken Livingstone's office for final approval.

The Beaumont Road estate currently comprises 896 homes, including three 20-storey tower blocks of three-bedroom maisonettes.

These will be demolished to create 379 social housing units, made up of 154 houses and 225 flats. In addition, 470 flats will be refurbished.

Of the £33.75m construction cost of the masterplan, £27.75m is for new build and £6m is for the refurbishment work. Work will start this autumn.

Forest Homes is a division of London & Quadrant Housing, which is in the process of improving all 2600 of its homes in Leyton and Leytonstone. L&Q has set aside £141m towards these regeneration projects.

New initiatives to be launched in the coming year, including the establishment of a Home Office-funded warden scheme, a jobs and training programme and the construction of a new computer-training facility.
