A merger of the Electrical Contractors Association and the Heating and Ventilating Contractors Association moved a step closer after surveys showed members are in favour.

The survey, undertaken by independent research consultancy Metra Martech, revealed that 81% of HVCA respondents - representing 20% of the membership - believe that convergence would be broadly beneficial. Also, 84% support the formation of a joint ECA and HVCA convergence group.

Survey results showed that 57% of ECA respondents were in favour of developing a model for a single organisation with another 8% requiring further information.

The HVCA council has met and already pledged its support to the development of a model of a single organisation to represent mechanical and electrical contractors. The council of the ECA will meet on 23 April and will discuss the survey results.

But in a written statement the ECA said that a “healthy and positive response has been received from ECA members, although concerns were raised over the preservation of the electrical interests and identity of the ECA. Comments showed an appetite for clarity and definition”.

The ECA's chief executive officer, David Pollock said: "This has been a very important survey. We had a good response and a majority of respondents supported going to the next stage in developing a model for a single organisation. It is now for ECA council to determine the way forward. We will continue to ensure that our members are involved in each stage of the consultative process."
