Facilities managers who take postgraduate degree courses in facilities management at one of six universities and colleges across the UK will be eligible to join the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) following a shake-up in the Institution's education programme.
The colleges that have been accredited by the RICS under the shake-up include University of West of England, the college of Estate Management, Heriot-Watt University, University of Greenwich, Napier University and Sheffield Hallam University.

The change has seen the institution form partnerships with several key education providers.

Once students have completed their postgraduate course they must work through the two-year Assessment of Professional Competence to become a chartered surveyor.

Under RICS rules, anyone who becomes a member must currently be designated a surveyor — although the institution, which boasts over 7,000 members in its facilities faculty, could in the future alter the designation.

Faculty chair, Fred Guscott is awaiting budgets to be approved for the faculty's business plan. 'A major part of it will be to encourage people to go through the education process,' he said.

He also plans to work closely with other facilities bodies.
