An intelligent lighting system has helped to minimise energy costs at the new Northern Ireland Mail Centre in Newtonabbey, Belfast.
As part of a major lighting scheme at the centre, over 1000 Cooper Lighting and Security batten luminaires have been linked into the intelligent lighting system to help minimise energy use at the site.

The main sorting hall is lit by rows of Crompack 5 twin-tube battens from Cooper's Crompton Lighting range, around one-third of which are maintained emergency versions. Each 1·5 m fluorescent batten is fitted with a digital, high-frequency regulating ballast and a standard metal reflector, and all are linked to one of 14 Intellect Groupmaster systems.

The Groupmaster systems maintain a pre-determined lighting level on the floor by automatically adjusting the luminaire outputs to account for daylight entering the centre's translucent roof. The digital regulation enables smooth and gradual changes to the lighting. The system also ensures constant illumination regardless of lamp age.

The lighting was designed by National Design Consultancy and the m&e contractor on the project was Rotary Services.
