Telemecanique is helping a Teesside renewable energy provider save on their electricity bill with drive control.

The installation of Telemecanique motor control equipment at renewable energy producer Sita UK’s Teesside facility will save over £90 000 of electricity a year.

The installation resulted from a routine production project being undertaken by PPT Drive Systems, a Schneider Electric specialist waste management solution partner. It was found that large centrifugal fans used in the power generation process were being run continuously at full duty with airflow controlled by mechanical vane dampers.

PPT completed a free energy audit and developed a model using six Telemecanique ac sensorless flux vector inverters from 30-110 kW. This showed a potential reduction in energy consumption from 320 kW to 50 kW per hour. By optimising fan speeds according to the demand, savings could be made.

The firm completed the installation in three days during an annual shutdown, with the plant operators unaffected as the operator panels, switches and Scada systems were unaffected.

The payback on the installation was under six months, reduced further as it qualified for the Enhanced Capital Allowance scheme.
