Rethinking Construction, the body overseeing the implementation of the Egan agenda, is seeking to merge with its subsidiary organisation Construction Best Practice.
This follows claims that efforts to improve the industry are being hampered by the proliferation of too many bodies.

An Audit Commission report found that work on the industry's modernisation programme was split between too many bodies. Alan Crane, chair of Rethinking Construction, said the idea of a merger had been agreed in principle but it would not happen until government funding for the bodies ended next year.

Research is currently being carried out into the compatibility of the two groups and meetings have been held with DTI civil servants to discuss what benefits could be achieved from merging the two bodies.

Brian Moone, chief executive of Construction Best Practice, commented: "It is still being considered whether any new body would have a totally new branding. Discussions are still at an early stage." He added that work is now taking place to standardise documentation and web sites.
