The Environmental Industries Commission (EIC) wants more action from government to support the UK environmental technology sector in the face of overseas competition.
The Innovation and Growth Team (a DTI Taskforce) report has highlighted actions that the EIC has lobbied for. These include tax incentives for investment in environmental technology; tighter enforcement of environmental laws by regulators; and a dedicated sponsoring unit in government to support the environmental industry.

The UK has not kept pace with EU performance in environmental exports, and has only a 4·7% share of the world market, compared to Germany's 11%, and France's 7%.

A government report estimated the environmental technology industry at US$515 billion – comparable with aerospace and pharmaceutical sectors.
