Alan Hopkins told Housing Today that he was “very concerned” about the problem of keyworker housing.
He said: “We are setting up a policy for keyworker housing. There will be an allocation of about two homes every month to some of those most in need.
“Some police officers and members of the Surrey Fire Service can’t even afford to live in the borough, they commute in from the coast.”
Hopkins said that the council had a policy of 25 per cent affordable housing on new developments and, as part of this, 60 new homes were currently being built in Walton-on-Thames.
Elmbridge Housing Trust was formed in 1999 to take on the council’s stock.
Its performance and policy manager Julian Beaney said: “Development there would be difficult whoever was in charge because of the green belt and the wealth [in the area].”
