The Industry Committee for Emergency Lighting (ICEL) and the British Standards Institution (BSI) have launched a new initiative that enables installers to verify their competence in designing, installing and testing emergency lighting.

The Competent Engineer certification scheme provides a register of engineers who have completed a specially structured course on emergency lighting. It has been launched in response to changes in fire safety regulations and the publication of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order. This phases out fire certificates in all but a few high risk cases and puts the onus on employers to carry out risk assessments of their sites. The course covers all aspects including legislation and standards, assessment of systems, design, system selection and installation, testing and maintenance.
